Milton-Madison Bridge - Milton, Kentucky to Madison, Indiana, USA
Buckland & Taylor Ltd. on team selected to design-build the Milton-Madison Bridge
(September 28, 2010) – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have awarded a design-build contract to a winning team consisting of Walsh Construction Company, La Porte Indiana and their design engineering team of Buckland & Taylor Ltd. (a COWI Company) of North Vancouver, British Columbia and Burgess & Niple Engineers of Columbus, Ohio
The Milton-Madison Bridge connects Milton, Ky., and Madison, Ind. and traverses the Ohio River. The existing steel truss bridge was built in 1929, with a total length of 969.5 m (3,181 ft.) and longest span of 221.5 m (727 ft.). The bridge is extremely narrow with two 10-foot lanes and no shoulders or sidewalk. The existing superstructure is in poor condition and is under capacity for the crossing.
The winning team proposed a scenario that was 20% below the engineers estimate and included significantly lessoned closure times for the bridge – reduced from 365 days to just 10! The team proposed a solution that will build temporary supports for a new superstructure, with traffic re-routed over the new bridge while the old superstructure is removed and permanent piers repaired. As a final step, the new truss will be slid over a short duration closure onto the permanent piers. Buckland & Taylor designed a similar scheme for the Capilano Bridge Replacement in North Vancouver, BC. “We are thrilled to be on the winning team for this important bridge linking Indiana and Kentucky. Our work on this bridge will continue to showcase Buckland & Taylor’s world class ability to provide solutions to our clients,” said Steve Hunt, President of Buckland & Taylor.
The new bridge superstructure is expected to be open to traffic atop rehabilitated vertical piers by September 15, 2012, making it the fastest bridge ever to be built over the Ohio River.
