The Murray MacKay Bridge was the first suspension bridge in North America to have an orthotropic steel deck, and the first in the world to utilize the deck as the top chord of the stiffening trusses.

The Bridge was constructed in 1970 and comprises a main span measuring 426 m (1400 ft.), with a total length of 1.2 km (7250 ft.). The Bridge was designed by Roger Dorton of Pratley & Dorton, who later became the manager of Buckland & Taylor Ltd.'s Ontario office, which closed upon his retirement.

B&T's Scope of Work:

2004

Since 2004, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. has provided advice to the Owner on various maintenance matters and modifications that are extending the useful life of the bridge.

2005

In 2005, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. performed an annual inspection.

2006

In 2006, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. completed an "analysis and survey" health analysis of the bridge, conducted a study of safety levels for ships' clearance under the bridge and provided various other engineering services.

2007

In 2007, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed maintenance catwalks.

2008

In 2008, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed the replacement of selected bearings.

2009

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was responsible for providing construction assistance for the replacement of the cable bent bearings and Expansion Joints (includes Fabrication).
