Peter G. Buckland

When Peter Buckland graduated from Cambridge University in 1960, he decided on a career in big bridge engineering. After five years designing suspension and cable-stayed bridges for consultants in the U.K. and Canada, and five years working for a steel fabricator and erector, he founded Buckland & Associates in 1970. He was joined by Peter Taylor in 1972 and the firm became Buckland & Taylor Ltd.

He has been the principal in charge of many of the company's projects, including renovations of the Lions' Gate Suspension Bridge, the Independent Engineer team checking the 13 km long prestressed Confederation Bridge, and the seismic retrofit of 30 bridges in California including the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge (as subconsultant to Sverdrup Corp.) and eight historic arch bridges.

His research into traffic loading of long span bridges was published in the 1980's. He has served on committees writing the AASHTO LRFD Code and the Canadian Standard on Design of Highway Bridges, and has received several awards for bridge engineering, including an Honorary Doctorate from the University of British Columbia, and Fellowship of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Canadian Academy of Engineers.
