LNG SUSPENSION BRIDGE

EG LNG Suspension Bridge

Location:

Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea

Description:

Overseas Bechtel, Inc. constructed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing, storage and export facility at Punta Europa, on Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. The facility includes a pipeline suspension bridge from the storage facility to the loading facility.

The suspension bridge has a main span of 350 m (1148 ft.) carrying the process piping, utilities and a walkway. It carries LNG in a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter pipeline from the plant to the jetty through dense rain forest over a geologically unstable slope. The walkway provides access for operations personnel from the LNG plant to the jetty.

Owner:

Marathon Oil and EG LNG Co.

Client:

Overseas Bechtel Inc.

Scope of Work:

In 2004 Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was selected to provide detailed design of the suspension structure and its land foundations. The scope included the development of a preliminary erection scheme and the preparation of a construction schedule and cost estimate.

The bridge was designed for ease of constructibility and, due to the remote location, to facilitate transportation of components to the site. The final segments of the bridge were constructed in 2006 and, in 2007, the pipes were put in operation. In 2008, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. performed a detailed inspection.
