ALEX FRASER BRIDGE
Location:Vancouver, BC, Canada Description:The Alex Fraser Bridge carries six lanes of traffic, and was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world from 1986, when it opened, to 1991. It was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Americas until the Cooper River Bridge opened on July 16, 2005. The Alex Fraser Bridge was built in 27 months and had the lowest cost per unit of deck area of this type of structure in the world. The project won several design awards. Total length: 930 m (3050 ft.)
Owner and Client:Government of British Columbia Scope of Work:CBA-Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed the bridge and provided construction supervision, including erection engineering for the main bridge. The most challenging aspects of the design were:

1990 - BC Science and Engineering Gold Medal, awarded to Buckland & Taylor Ltd., CBA Engineering and the BC Ministry of Transportation & Highways for the Alex Fraser Bridge. 1987 - Award of Excellence, Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards, for the design of the Alex Fraser (Annacis) Bridge. 1986 - Award of Merit, Prestressed Concrete Institute, for the design of prestressed concrete deck panels for the Alex Fraser (Annacis) Bridge. 1987 - George S. Richardson Medal, International Bridge Conference, Pittsburgh, PA, for the single, recent, outstanding achievement in bridge engineering.
Postage Stamp:
In 1995, Canada Post Corporation presented Buckland & Taylor Ltd. with a postage stamp of the Alex Fraser Bridge.
