ANGUS L. MACDONALD BRIDGE
Location:Halifax, NS, Canada Description:Angus L. MacDonald Bridge comprises a 762 m (2,500 ft.) suspension bridge, with main span of 441 m (1447 ft.), and 585 m (1,918 ft.) long approaches. The bridge was constructed in 1955. In 1998, the bridge was widened from two lanes to three. This involved the replacement of the concrete deck with a wider orthotropic deck on the approaches, as well as modifications to the suspension spans. Owner/Client:Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was retained by the Owner in 1996 to provide expert review of the proposed widening scheme,
including the effect on aerodynamic stability of adding orthotropic deck sidewalks to the suspension bridge outside the
existing stiffening trusses. In 2001/2002, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was again retained to provide expert advice on the
condition of the orthotropic deck paving after two or three years of service. In 2003, it was decided to repave the orthotropic
steel deck on the approaches. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. prepared the tender documents for the repaving and acted as the Owner's
Representative on-site during construction in 2004. In 2004, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was retained to evaluate the "health" of the
bridge. This was done using our "survey and analysis" technique, which consists of conducting a survey to establish the position of
main structural elements and comparing this with a detailed analysis of the bridge as-built and as subsequently modified. Buckland &
Taylor Ltd. also performed a dynamic analysis and guided a study of aerodynamic stability of the bridge. In 2006, Buckland & Taylor Ltd.conducted
a study of safety levels for ships' clearance under the bridge, performed annual inspection, and provided various other engineering services.
