BC SOUTHERN CROSSING PROJECT - KETTLE RIVER AERIAL CROSSING
Location:Grand Forks, BC, Canada Description:The Southern Crossing Pipeline consists of 303 km (188 miles) of 610 mm (24 inches) gas pipeline from Yahk to Oliver. At a cost of $396 million, it is the largest capital project in BC Gas history. As part of this project, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed pipeline crossings for installation on 3 rail bridges and 2 pipe arch crossings near Grand Forks. Owner:Terasen Gas (formerly BC Gas) Client:Integrated Pipeline Projects Inc. (IPPI) Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. completed the feasibility study for the construction of 5 aerial pipeline crossings over the Kettle River in the vicinity of Grand Forks. The final designs for installation of the gas pipeline on these crossings, ranging from 53 m (174 ft.) to 155 m (509 ft.), were completed and the 3 crossings on existing bridges were constructed in 2000. Because IPPI was permitted to install part of the pipeline under the Kettle River, the 2 pipe arch crossings were not constructed.
In 2002, an assessment of the pipeline was performed for loading and vibrations caused by an in-line maintenance vehicle. A series of additional supports were designed and installed to enhance the capacity of the pipeline supports for the in-line maintenance vehicle. Completed in 2002.
