BELGO LOG CONVEYOR BRIDGE

Belgo Log Conveyor Bridge

Location:

Shawinigan, Quebec, Canada

Description:

Built in 1917 to carry and stack logs 24 hours per day, this bridge had seriously deteriorated by the 1980's.

Main span: 183 m (600 ft.)

Owner and Client:

Consolidated-Bathurst Inc.

Scope of Work:

Using specialized techniques, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. brought the bridge back to full strength, without significant down time, by transforming it from a suspension bridge into a cable-stayed bridge.

At the end of the first year's reconstruction, the bridge was supported partly on the old suspension system and partly on the new cable-stayed system as shown in the photo. It then had to operate through a harsh Quebec winter and a warm summer before reconstruction could continue - a precarious condition requiring the most careful engineering because cable-stayed and suspension systems do not respond the same to changes of temperature.

This is believed to be a world's first full conversion of a suspension bridge to a cable-stayed bridge and it was done without interruption of service.

Completed in 1985.
