BERNARD AVENUE OVERPASS

Bernard Avenue Overpass

Location:

Kelowna, BC, Canada

Description:

The Bernard Avenue Overpass is designed to carry four lanes of traffic over the CN Railway and a future municipal connector roadway.

The City of Kelowna elected to use the Design/Build method to deliver the project. The successful Design/Build bid design was developed by Buckland & Taylor Ltd. working together with the Contractor, Surespan Construction Ltd. The resulting design is light, simple, and highly constructible.

The 59 m (194 ft.) long structure has spans of 19 m, 21 m, and 19 m (62 ft., 70 ft., 62 ft.). Steel piles for the piers were extended up to simple precast concrete crossheads, which minimized formwork.

The deck is a composite steel and concrete system which utilizes weathering steel girders. The 225 mm (9") thick concrete deck is made up of 95 mm (3-3/4") thick precast prestressed deck form panels with a 130 mm (5-1/8") thick composite concrete overlay.
