BIG CREEK BRIDGE
Location:Big Sur, CA, USA Description:Big Creek Bridge is located along the central coast of California and is one of the historic concrete arch bridges built in the 1930’s. It is an unusual double arch bridge with cantilevered half arch side spans. It is 179 m. Owner and Client:Caltrans Scope of Work:Buckland and Taylor Ltd., was selected by Caltrans to design the seismic retrofit of this bridge to a site specific spectrum corresponding to a maximum credible earthquake. The design included longitudinal deck post-tensioning, CIDH piles at the abutments, tower strengthening, and confinement of the spandral columns. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. reviewed contractor claims of site conditions differing from the log of test borings, coordinated with geotechnical engineers and assisted Caltrans with contract change orders. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. reviewed the work schedule and was able to approve changes that significantly accelerated the construction schedule.
