BIXBY CREEK BRIDGE

Bixby Creek Bridge

Highway 1, 18 miles south of Carmel, California, USA

Description:

Two lane, reinforced concrete arch bridge constructed in 1932. It is one of the most photographed bridges on the West Coast of North America.

Total length including approach spans: 218 m (714 ft.)
Main span: 98 m (320 ft.)

Scope of Work:

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed the seismic retrofit for this historic structure. The final design involved linking the deck so that it behaves as a continuous diaphragm and ensuring the arch remained stable under the seismic displacements. Construction was completed in 1996.

Awards:

  • In the category of Major Structures, the 2001 CALTRANS Excellence in Transportation Award was awarded to Buckland & Taylor Ltd. for the Bixby Creek Bridge Seismic Retrofit.

  • CELSOC 2001 Engineering Excellence Honor Award was awarded to Buckland & Taylor Ltd. for the Bixby Creek Bridge Seismic Retrofit.

  • Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was selected for an ACEC National Honor Award for the Bixby Creek Bridge Seismic Retrofit.
