BIXBY CREEK BRIDGE
Location:Highway 1, 18 miles south of Carmel, California, USA Description:Two lane, reinforced concrete arch bridge constructed in 1932. It is one of the most photographed bridges on the West Coast of North America. Total length including approach spans: 218 m (714 ft.)
Owner and Client:State of California Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed the seismic retrofit for this historic structure. The final design involved linking the deck so that it behaves as a continuous diaphragm and ensuring the arch remained stable under the seismic displacements. Construction was completed in 1996.
