BURLINGTON BRIDGE
Location:Over the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa, USA Description:The Iowa Department of Transportation built this new cable-stayed bridge to replace the old MacArthur toll bridge, which opened in 1917 and was so structurally deficient that traffic restrictions were required. The new bridge is a single tower composite cable-stayed structure. Total length including approach spans: 853 m (2800 ft.)
Owner:State of Iowa Client:John F. Beasley Engineering, Inc. Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. provided construction engineering to the Contractor for the balanced cantilever erection scheme. The scope included detailed step-by-step computer analysis of various erection schemes for construction loading, dynamic and static wind loading, time dependent effects, and thermal effects. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. also provided detailed construction procedures as well as geometry control and tracking data. Completed in 1993.
