CHING CHAU MIN JIANG BRIDGE
Location:City of Fuzhou, PRC Description:This 605 m (1985 ft.) main span cable-stayed bridge carries 6 lanes of traffic across the Min Jiang (Min River) and links Fuzhou Changle International Airport with the city of Fuzhou. Owner:Fuzhou Municipal People's Government Client:Hong Kong Construction (Holdings) Ltd., (formerly Kumagai Gumi (H.K.) Ltd.) Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. prepared the successful alternative Design/Build bid design for Kumagai Gumi Ltd. It included significant improvements in aerodynamic stability and constructibility. This innovative design substituted a composite precast concrete deck supported by steel plate girders for a streamlined orthotropic steel box girder deck. The A-frame tower specified in the conforming design provided sufficient torsional rigidity for flutter stability in the deck, permitting the use of plate girders with carefully designed leading edge details to achieve low speed aerodynamic stability for vortex shedding response. Extensive wind tunnel testing at Tongji University Shanghai demonstrated that the alternative design met the severe aerodynamic site criteria. The alternative bid design also eliminated two piers in the sidespans. This change resulted in significant programme acceleration, simpler construction, and significant cost savings.
Buckland & Taylor Ltd. also provided advice to the Contractor on aspects of detailed design and construction methods. The project was completed in 2000.
