DELTAPORT WAY EXTENSION, ROBERTS BANK OVERHEAD NO. 2023
Location:Delta, BC, Canada Description:This eight span composite steel girder bridge provides highway access to the Deltaport Ship Terminal. The bridge features a double curve alignment. Total length: 367 m (1204 ft.) Owner:Vancouver Port Corporation Client:McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. provided conceptual design for the feasibility report, final design, and construction site services. Severe geotechnical constraints led to several structural innovations, including: design and details that allow and/or adjust for up to 250 mm (9.8 inches) of anticipated pier settlements; simply supported end spans to allow large differential settlements between abutments and piers; and the use of base isolation bearings to accept seismic displacements magnified by soft soil conditions. Completed in 1996.
