FRENCH CREEK BRIDGE
Location:Vancouver Island, BC, Canada Description:Four lane high level bridge with 4 steel plate girder spans and a concrete deck. Total length: 211 m (692 ft.) Owner and Client:Government of British Columbia Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was retained to provide one of two competing designs for this project, which is located on the Vancouver Island Highway. Contractors bid on both designs; the design by Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was the low bid. The design took account of a spawning channel in French Creek, possible settlement on high fill at the north abutment and slope stability of a steep slope at the south abutment. The bridge is in a major earthquake zone and was designed around ease of construction while protecting the environment. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. also provided engineering services during construction. Completed in 1994.
