FORT NELSON RIVER BRIDGE
Location:Northeast of Fort Nelson, BC, Canada Description:This new bridge over the Fort Nelson river is a component of the Sierra Yoyo Desan Road. The bridge is 320 m (1050 ft.) long, with a maximum span of 64 m (210 ft.). The road involves new alignments on the east and west sides of the Fort Nelson River. Owner:BC Ministry of Energy and Mines Client:Ledcor Projects Inc. Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. provided pre-bid engineering services, detailed design services and quality assurance during construction. The Design/Build/Maintain project involved the design and construction of a resource road on an extremely aggressive fast-track schedule. There was
less than one month from notice to proceed to pile driving. Schedule, the remote location and demanding climatic conditions necessitated innovations in
construction techniques for this size of structure. Innovations included: precast concrete deck and barriers; precast concrete pile caps and abutments;
launching beams for bridge girders; and the use of steel pier diaphragms. The project was completed November, 2004.
