GRANITE CANYON BRIDGE
Location:Near Carmel, CA, USA Description:Granite Canyon Bridge is located on State Route 1, about 12 miles south of Carmel and is one of the historic concrete arch bridges built in the 1930’s. It is 88 m. Owner and Client:Caltrans Scope of Work:Buckland and Taylor Ltd., was selected by Caltrans to design the seismic retrofit of this bridge to a site specific spectrum corresponding to a maximum credible earthquake. The exterior appearance remained unaltered in order to preserve the original character of the arch bridge. The retrofit consisted of establishing a continuous superstructure by means of longitudinal post-tensioning beneath the deck and the addition of extra sidewalk reinforcement. The abutments were stiffened through CIDH piles to provide the necessary deck restraint laterally. The arch crown area was supported transversely by means of dedicated lateral shear keys with longitudinal slide pads, and some of the spandrel columns were confined.
