HAGWILGET BRIDGE
Location:Bulkley River Canyon, New Hazelton, BC, Canada Description:This single lane suspension bridge was opened to traffic in 1932. It was designed by the BC Department of Public Works in Victoria. By 1987, the trucks crossing this over 60 year old bridge weighed about three to four times the original design load. Hagwilget Bridge was showing signs of distress and needed strengthening and emergency repairs. Main span: 140 m (460 ft.) Owner and Client:Government of British Columbia Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. evaluated the bridge and provided upgrade design to allow the bridge to carry increased truck loads. The load carrying capacity of the bridge was increased from 14 tonne trucks to 52 tonne trucks without strengthening . This was achieved by making the new grating deck act compositely with the trusses and also adjusting the hangers. Reconstruction during short night-time closures was supervised by Buckland & Taylor Ltd. in 1990. In 2003, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed additional maintenance upgrades to the original portion of the structure. These upgrades included 8 eyerods, design of a new load path for working loads on the approaches and replacement of corroded steel elements. Awards:
