JACQUES CARTIER BRIDGE
Location:Montréal, QC, Canada Description:This steel truss cantilever bridge built in 1930, links the City of Montréal with the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. The bridge carries five lanes of traffic. Approximately 43 million vehicles cross the bridge every year.

Owner and Client:Ponts Jacques Cartier et Champlain Incorporées (PJCCI) Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was originally retained by the Owner to provide expert consulting engineering services and advice in the preparation of Design/Build contract documents for the redecking of the bridge. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was later retained as Owner's Engineer for the construction of the redecking. The existing deck system consisted of a concrete deck with steel stringers. In 1998-1999, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. developed base case conceptual redecking designs and strategies for both precast and cast-in-place concrete replacement systems. Both systems reflected PJCCI's requirements for high quality and durability. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. prepared Design/Build drawings and contract documents for the preferred precast deck replacement system, which was to be completed under traffic and within a difficult schedule. These documents were completed by March 2000 and a contract was awarded in September 2000. While contract documents permitted and encouraged alternate deck systems, the winning proponent advanced the precast deck system and the replacement strategy developed by Buckland & Taylor Ltd. - the only proponent to do so.
