McPHEE BRIDGE
Location:Cranbrook, BC, Canada Description:This composite bathtub bridge comprises two spans of 60 m (197 ft.) and two spans of 76 m (249 ft.). Total length: 274 m (899 ft.) Owner:Government of British Columbia Client:Brittain Steel Ltd. Scope of Work:Open "bath tub" girders of this type usually require expensive temporary bracing between the top flanges for erection purposes. By using advanced structural theory, Buckland & Taylor Ltd., working for the Steel Erector, cut the amount of temporary material required to about a quarter of the normal. The Company also increased the capacity of the highline and developed a more economical erection scheme for raising it. The two girders parked temporarily on the bridge act as counterweights to reduce the bending moments and hence the amount of permanent steel added only for erection purposes. Completed in 1980.
