OLD COLUMBIA RIVER BRIDGE
Location:Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada Description:The Old Columbia River Bridge is a seven span steel structure built in 1924 that carries a single lane of traffic. It consists of one stringer span, four double warren truss spans and two camel back truss spans. All spans are simply supported and the truss spans are through trusses. The camel back trusses span 65 m (213 ft.) bearing to bearing. The double warren trusses span 47 m (154 ft.) bearing to bearing. Total length: 329 m (1079 ft.) Owner and Client:Government of British Columbia Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. completed an inspection prior to preparation of a load rating study for the Old Columbia River Bridge No. 0422. The load rating study evaluated the superstructure and floor system of the bridge. The evaluation was in accordance with the provisions of the Supplement No. 1-1990 "Existing Bridge Evaluation" of CAN/CSA-S6-88 "Design of Highway Bridges". Using conventional procedures, the Live Load Rating Factor (LLRF) calculated for the bridge was 0.22. The resulting recommendation for a posted load limit was 13.45 tonnes (29,700 lbs.) Subsequently, the Ministry of Transportation and Highways retained Buckland & Taylor Ltd. to prepare a design to reinforce the bridge to allow a minimum 27 tonne posted load limit.
