OLD TRAIL BRIDGE

Old Trail Bridge

Location:

Trail, BC, Canada

Description:

The Old Trail Bridge No. 0391 was the first crossing of the Columbia River into the City of Trail. It was constructed in 1912 and provided the only access to the city until the construction of a new bridge in 1961. At that time, a new 4 lane bridge was built upstream of the original bridge. The old bridge was originally under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation and Highways but is now owned and maintained by the City of Trail. The Old Trail Bridge consists of 4 through truss spans, of approximately equal length, with a total length of 208 m (682 ft.).

Owner and Client:

City of Trail

Scope of Work:

The bridge was closed to traffic in 2000 October as a result of concern over significant section losses in the corroded bottom chords of the steel trusses. Detailed inspection and evaluation (using CAN/CSA-S6-88 Clause 12) of the steel trusses and the timber sidewalk of the bridge were conducted. Repair and replacement alternatives, together with cost estimates for each, were prepared. Based on a cost benefit analysis, the Owner chose to repair/strengthen the truss bottom chords and to replace the aging timber sidewalk. The bridge was repaired and reopened to traffic in 2001 November. The revitalized bridge re-establishes a well used crossing that is expected to serve the community for many years to come.
