PEACE RIVER BRIDGE
Location:Peace River, Alberta, Canada Description:This two lane bridge crosses the Peace River near Peace River, Alberta. It consists of four plate girders, each 4.5 m (15 ft.) deep. Total length: 734 m (2408 ft.) Owner:
Government of Alberta Client:Northern Steel Inc. Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. provided the erection engineering for this bridge. The four steel plate girders were assembled on the North bank and progressively launched across the river. Despite requiring very precise engineering, the launching of the Peace River Bridge was not only among the longest bridge launches in North America, it was extremely fast and efficient. A typical launch of 112 m (367 ft.) took 10 hours through the use of an inclined launching "nose" on the leading edge of the girders, and rockers on the piers. In order to minimize the need for extensive strengthening of the girders, an ingenious "yielding" lateral guide system was used to share the lateral load between all four girders. Completed in 1991.
