PITT RIVER BRIDGE

Skytrain Bridge

Location:

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Description:

Nine double track spans of the CPR main line were replaced during 10 hour closures. Shore spans were skidded sideways, river spans were lifted by a specially designed A-frame on a huge barge.

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. designed the system, and the A-frame lifting device.
The vital requirement the erection scheme was to have a complete span removed, and replaced, including bearings, and track re-laid, so that running of trains on the main trans-continental trunk line was interrupted for only 10 hours per span. All spans were completed in on schedule in 1981.
