ESPLANADE RIEL (PROVENCHER PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE)

Description:

Esplanade Riel crosses the Red River in the center of Winnipeg just downstream from the confluence of the Red River and the Assiniboine River. It was designed exclusively for pedestrians, cyclists, and recreational users. Some of the unique features of this bridge include an architectural composited tower that is prestressed and a cantilevered and stayed semi-circular plaza area at the base of the tower, which will provide space for commercial activities. The pedestrian bridge has a cast-in-place concrete box girder and a back span of 86 m (282 ft.).

Scope of Work:

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. provided erection engineering services to the Contractor, MD Steele, for this unique structure. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. worked with them during the tender stage to produce a cast-in-place alternate to the precast design shown in the tender documents, in order to reduce the project cost. The project was awarded to MD Steele for the cast-in-place alternate at $14 million. The lowest bid price for the precast design was $16 million. Completed in the fall of 2003.
