Description:

Envisioned as a tribute from the current King of Thailand to his brother King Rama 8, this single tower cable-stayed bridge spans the Chao Phraya River at the centre of Bangkok.

Total length: 475 m (1558 ft.)
Main span: 300 m (984 ft.)
Tower height: 160 m (525 ft.)

Scope of Work:

The Design/Build contract was awarded to a Joint Venture headed by China State Construction & Engineering Co. with engineering services provided by Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick Ltd. (site inspection and geotechnical design) and Buckland & Taylor Ltd. (cable-stayed bridge design).

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. achieved cost savings of about 15% by the substitution of a composite precast concrete deck and steel plate girders in place of an orthotropic steel box girder. The entire structure below deck is enclosed by an advanced composite skin for aesthetic treatment of the low level bridge underside and greatly reduced maintenance. Buckland & Taylor Ltd.'s scope of work included both the design of the cable-stayed bridge and the provision of construction engineering for its erection.

Completed in 2002, main span closure was achieved in December 2001.

Awards:

2003 Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Medal - This award, presented at the International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, is for a single, recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering that, through vision and innovation, provides an icon to the community for which it was designed.

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. recevied an Award of Merit at the 14th Annual CEBC Awards for Engineering Excellence.

2003 Canadian Consulting Engineering Award of Excellence - The annual Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards are the most important national mark of recognition for Canadian consulting engineering firms.
