SIMON FRASER BRIDGE

Simon Fraser Bridge

Location:

Prince George, BC, Canada

Description:

The BC Ministry of Transportation sought four lane capacity on Highway 97 in Prince George. The existing Simon Fraser Bridge provided only two lanes. Buckland & Taylor Ltd.’s task was to identify the most cost-effective solution that would provide the desired four lanes.

Owner/Client:

BC Ministry Transportation

Scope of Work:

Buckland & Taylor Ltd.'s investigation of potential solutions considered three twin bridge options and one widening option. In 2007 we identified, and the Ministry accepted, the preferred option as a two-lane, 400 m (1312 ft.) five span continuous plate girder composite delta-leg bridge to twin the existing bridge. The bridge includes one span over CN Railway, three spans over the Fraser River, and one span over Queensway Street and one sidewalk.

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. completed the final design work and produced a final tender package consisting of design drawings and specifications, as well as procurement drawings for structural steel. We are currently providing support during construction. The new bridge is scheduled to be complete in 2009. The photo above shows the old Simon Fraser Bridge and a temporary work bridge beside it that will be used to provide construction access in building the new bridge.
