SECOND NARROWS ROAD BRIDGE
Location:Vancouver, BC, Canada Description:Six lanes, 915 m (3000 ft.) of deck truss, the remainder on partially prestressed concrete girders. Total length including approach spans: 1292 m (4238 ft.)
Owner and Client:Government of British Columbia Scope of Work:In 1980, the Company derived an ingenious scheme for adding two lanes to the bridge. In 1992, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. carried out seismic assessment of Second Narrows Bridge using site response spectra derived from soil amplification considerations. We established ductility demands in all components and designed retrofits for the foundations, piers and superstructure. At the same time, we studied widening the bridge to eight lanes to full modern standards, which almost doubles the width, as the current lanes are substandard, and for adding transit. In 1995, we completed final design for a new maintenance traveller, and for seismic upgrading of the bridge in its current six-lane condition. Construction of the seismic retrofit, deck resurfacing and addition of new concrete barriers was completed in 1994.
