SECOND NARROWS RAILWAY BRIDGE

Second Narrows Railway Bridge

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Description:

The bridge was constructed in the late 1960's. In 1980 it was severely damaged by a ship that rammed a side span in dense fog, destroying that span, knocking a tower off its base, and partially dropping the lift span.

Main span: 152 m (500 ft.)

Scope of Work:

Buckland & Taylor Ltd. was retained as review consultant for the $15 million emergency repairs. Retrieval of the highly stressed, damaged, precarious structure was safely completed in 20 weeks.

Completed in 1980.
