Description:

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, completed in 1950, replaced its famous predecessor, which dramatically collapsed during moderate winds in November 1940. At the time of construction, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was the world's third longest span.

Main span length: 853 m (2800 ft.)

Scope of Work:

In 1984, Buckland & Taylor Ltd., in association with Arvid Grant and Associates Inc. of Olympia Washington, provided a thorough inspection and assessment of this crossing for the State of Washington. The State normally handles inspections with their own staff but desired a "benchmark" independent assessment of, what was at the time of inspection, the world's tenth longest span bridge.

In 1995, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. in association with TAMS Consultants of Seattle WA, provided a study of options for expansion of vehicluar and transit capacity on the bridge. Options included: the addition of a second deck level, widening of the existing deck, construction of a second span.
