EUGENE TALMADGE MEMORIAL BRIDGE
Location:Savannah, Georgia, USA Description:The Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge crosses the Savannah River in the City of Savannah, Georgia. Total length: 621 m (2037 ft.)
Owner:State of Georgia Client:Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. provided construction engineering to the Contractor for the balanced canteliver erection scheme and designed the form travellers for this cast-in-place concrete cable-stayed bridge. The Company used the wind analysis results derived from our step-by-step erection analysis to develop and design the temporary cable restraint system for the partially erected structure. This restraint system had to be designed to withstand hurricane force winds. A water ballast system in the 200 ton form travellers controlled bridge stresses and geometry to an accuracy of +- 25 mm (1 inch) during segment casting. Two senior Buckland & Taylor Ltd. engineers were cited by Engineering News Record Magazine for the construction engineering of this bridge. Completed in 1991.
