WESTHAM ISLAND BRIDGE
Location:Ladner, BC, Canada Description:Westham Island Bridge is located over Canoe Pass in the Fraser River Estuary between Ladner and Westham Island. The bridge was first built between 1909 and 1912, but all components of the structure have been subsequently replaced at least once. The bridge now has a total length of approximately 325 m (1066 ft.) and consists of 33 spans; 3 single lane truss spans, including a 37 m (121 ft.) timber Howe truss, and 30 narrow two lane approach spans. Owner and Client:Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (Translink) Scope of Work:Buckland & Taylor Ltd. conducted a detailed inspection of the bridge to establish the current configuration and condition of the structure. Based on a survey of the requirements of bridge users, a live loading criteria was derived for use in a load rating of the bridge. A bridge load rating was conducted for the derived live loading in accordance with Section 14 of CHBDC. Conceptual designs were developed for the specific structural improvements required to meet the derived live loading. Completed in 2003. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. then developed the detailed designs for condition deficiencies and load rating upgrades. We also provided supervision during construction of the upgrades, which was completed in 2004.
