YOHO (5 MILE) BRIDGE
Location:Trans-Canada Highway, Golden, BC, Canada Description:The old Yoho (5 mile) Bridge was located in extremely difficult terrain near the bottom of the Kicking Horse River Canyon. The old bridge had a very poor rating based on its condition, capacity and the horizontal and vertical alignment of the highway up to and through the crossing. Owner and Client:Government of British Columbia Scope of Work:The design of the new bridge and approaches had several significant constraints, including: very steep terrain on either side of the crossing, steep talus slope where rock falls are a significant issue, a large active slide, construction over the top of highway traffic and an active railway, etc. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. participated on the value engineering team. The work included analysis and assessment of the preliminary conceptual designs for the steel and concrete bridge structure alternatives as well as the highway alignment options for the approaches. These options included very large retainment structures and slide mitigation measures.
