YUKON BRIDGES
Location:Yukon, Canada Description:A total of 31 bridges and 4 large span culverts was inspected on Yukon highways. Eighteen of the bridges and the four culverts were located along the Alaska Highway from Watson Lake to Haines Junction. The other bridges were situated on the Klondike, Robert Campbell and Dempster Highways. The bridges were of various sizes and structural types, including the two longest bridges on the Alaska Highway, Nisutlin (600 m/2000 ft.) and Teslin (447 m/1466 ft.). Owner and Client:Yukon Community & Transportation Services Scope of Work:In 1991, Buckland & Taylor Ltd. inspected and evaluated the bridges for the maximum legal trucks operating without special permits and a variety of permit vehicles.
Each bridge was inspected for damage or deterioration of bridge members, confirmation of member sizes, measurement of deck overlay thicknesses, and bearing and expansion joint functioning and performance.
All 31 bridges were analyzed to determine the member loadings produced by the maximum legal non-permit truck, which has a 63.5 tonne Gross Vehicle Weight. The evaluation indicated that deficiencies existed on 16 of the bridges for the maximum legal truck loading.
Buckland & Taylor Ltd. made recommendations for upgrading the deficient members. Buckland & Taylor Ltd. developed preliminary cost estimates for this work.
Buckland & Taylor Ltd. completed the inspections and load ratings for the originally agreed budget and on schedule. Completed in 1991.
